Beginning two centuries ago, many wetlands were turned into farm fields or urban areas, yet wetlands play an important role in removing water pollution, regulating water storage and flows, and providing habitat for wildlife. Wetland restoration could help restore these benefits. Potential wetland areas, as developed for this map, are lands that naturally accumulate water due to topography and have historically had poorly or very poorly draining soils. This dataset was produced by the US EPA to support research and online mapping activities related to the EnviroAtlas. EnviroAtlas (https://www.epa.gov/enviroatlas) allows the user to interact with a web-based, easy-to-use, mapping application to view and analyze multiple ecosystem services for the contiguous United States. The dataset is available as downloadable data (https://edg.epa.gov/data/Public/ORD/EnviroAtlas) or as an EnviroAtlas map service. First, a wetness index was used to identify areas more likely, due to topography, to be wet enough to support wetlands. Second, soil types were narrowed down to poorly and very poorly drained soils. These layers were then combined and divided, as applicable, into four classes of interest: high, moderate, low, and no evident potential. Land with higher wetness potential and a higher percentage of poorly or very poorly draining soils was considered to have higher wetland potential. Land with higher wetness potential and a present, but lower, percentage of poorly or very poorly draining soils was considered to have moderate wetland potential. Land with a higher percentage of poorly or very poorly draining soils, but less wetness potential, was considered to have low potential. All other land had no evident potential. Of note, though an important factor, land cover was not incorporated into this dataset to allow end users more flexibility in their analyses. Another layer, Potentially Restorable Wetlands on Agricultural Land (PRW-Ag), is also available in the EnviroAtlas. This layer incorporates crop and pasture land into the analysis as it is more likely suitable land for wetland restoration. Evaluated potentially suitable wetness (CTI >= 900) - The Compound Topographic Index (CTI) produced wetness values (82 to 3371) related to the upstream contributing area and slope to overland flow and accumulation. An evaluation of National Land Cover Database (NLCD) wetlands and National Wetland Inventory (NWI) Lacustrine and Palustrine wetlands in Georgia and Iowa showed that CTI values >= 900 captured the majority of wetlands. Evaluated potentially suitable soils (poorly and very poorly drained) - Two maps were combined to create a contiguous U.S. soils map - the Soil Survey Geographic dataset (SSURGO) and the Digital General Soil Map of the U.S. (or State Soil Geographic (STATSGO2)). Among the attributes in this data are variably-sized mapping units (polygons) and accompanying soil drainage types, expressed as a percentage of the whole. Soil drainage types range from excessively drained to very poorly drained. Two soil types, poorly and very poorly drained soils, are conservatively considered to be more amenable to wetland restoration. The SSURGO vector (polygon) data were converted into a 30 meter grid (raster). The poorly and very poorly drained grids were summarized (with Raster Calculator) for a total estimate of potential poorly or very poorly drained soils (PVP) value per mapping unit. A preliminary analysis of the PVP layer showed a strong bimodal distribution of PVP. This suggested that PVP generally either dominated the soil composition or was only a minor portion of the area. The results were then reclassed, as applicable, into four final classes: high potential (pixels with CTI >= 900 and 80-100% PVP were reclassed to 3), moderate potential (pixels with CTI >= 900 and 1-79% PVP were reclassed to 2), low potential (pixels with 80-100% PVP and CTI < 900 were reclassed to 1), and none evident (all other land [1-79% PVP and CTI < 900 or 0% PVP and any CTI] were reclassed to 0).
