Defined by Rutecki et al. (2014), a sand shoal is "a natural, underwater ridge, bank, or bar consisting of, or covered by, sand or other unconsolidated material, resulting in shallower water depths than surrounding areas." In the dataset, attributes characterize shoals with a classification scheme developed with a basis in the Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification Standard (CMECS). The data were developed to advance planning and environmental assessment of sand dredging. This dataset was part of a larger project focused on marine fish distribution and habitat use: Regional essential fish habitat geospatial assessment and framework for offshore sand features. The NOAA's NCCOS, Office for Coastal Management, and the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management worked together on this project. Depth and geomorphology metrics were derived from modified versions of the Coastal Relief Model as described in Pickens et al. (2020). The extent of analysis includes U.S. federal waters seaward of the U.S. Submerged Lands Act Boundary to a maximum depth of 50 m in the Gulf of Mexico and U.S. Atlantic Ocean.
