The program focuses on estuarine areas important to commercial fisheries and includes data on commercial finfish and invertebrate species, as well as other species commonly captured in trawl sampling. This Mississippi dataset is a subset of the CAGES Relational Database which is a compilation of fishery-independent data contributed by natural resource agencies of the Gulf States (Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida). This data set includes data from trawls collected by the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources and the University of Southern Mississippi's Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (MDMR/GCRL), as well as associated hydrographic data. Trawl data were used to calculate CPUE (catch per unit effort) at each station for the years 1973 through 2005. The purpose of CAGES is to compile the fishery independent data from five Gulf States into a database to more easily compare the fisheries across the US Gulf of Mexico coast. The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources and the University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (MDMR/GCRL) conducted monthly resource assessments at designated stations in the Mississippi Sound. MDMR/GCRL selected these few sites as being representative of their areas’ nekton based on past surveys. The standard trawl used for fisheries-independent sampling was a 4.9-m (16-ft) flat otter trawl with 3.8-cm (1.5-in) stretched mesh webbing of nylon multifilament twine. Environmental data were collected at each site prior to the trawl tow. Surface and bottom water temperature and salinity were recorded along with water depth before each tow. The MDMR/GCRL trawl also was fitted with a 6-mm (1/4-in) bar mesh liner. The trawl was spread by 0.9 m long by 0.5 m tall (36 x 18 in) plank board trawl doors protected along their rims by iron plate. Tow line length was determined by a 6:1 scope with water depth. Trawls were towed for 10 minutes at about 3.7 kph (2.4 mph) from a 6.4-m (21-ft) research boat. Abundance data were not collected for the following species until 1985: Anchoa mitchilli, Bairdiella chrysoura, Lagodon rhomboides, Paralichthys lethostigma, Pogonias cromis, Sciaenops ocellatus, and Symphurus plagiusa. All specimens caught in a trawl were identified, counted, and recorded. Standard length (mm) and weights (g) of up to 50 specimens of each species, including the minimum and maximum sizes, were measured and recorded for commercial species only. For non-commercial species only minimum and maximum standard lengths were recorded (Anderson 2009). Catch data in trawls were converted to numbers caught per hectare (#/ha) using the tow times and calculated conversion factors. The conversion factor was calculated based on an assumed 80% spread of the width of the trawl webbing along the headrope (defined here as the headrope length) and the estimated distance towed in one minute calculated from reported tow times. The conversion factor is equal to the time needed (in minutes) for the trawl to cover one hectare. To calculate the CPUE the following formula was used: Conversion factor / Tow duration (min) X Number caught = #/ha. The conversion factor for Mississippi was calculated to be 41.56. This metadata was automatically generated from the FGDC Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadatastandard version FGDC-STD-001-1998 using the June 2011 version of the FGDC CSDGM to ISO 19115-2 transform.
