Beginning two centuries ago, many wetlands were turned into farm fields or urban areas, yet wetlands play an important role in removing water pollution, regulating water storage and flows, and providing habitat for wildlife. Potentially restorable wetlands for this map are lands currently in agriculture that naturally accumulate water and historically had poor drainage and hydric soils. By restoring some of these wetlands, it is hoped that the benefits of wetlands would also be restored. This dataset was produced by the US EPA to support research and online mapping activities related to the EnviroAtlas. EnviroAtlas (https://www.epa.gov/enviroatlas) allows the user to interact with a web-based, easy-to-use, mapping application to view and analyze multiple ecosystem services for the contiguous United States. The dataset is available as downloadable data (https://edg.epa.gov/data/Public/ORD/EnviroAtlas) or as an EnviroAtlas map service. First, land cover was narrowed to agricultural and pasture lands. Second, soil types were narrowed down to poorly and very poorly drained soils. Third, a wetness index was used to further indicate areas considered likely wet enough to support wetlands. The following datasets were used: National Land Cover Database (NLCD) from the Multi-Resolution Land Characteristics Consortium (MRLC), (2006); CTI (produced for the EPA by Tetra Tech, Inc. 2012); Soil Survey Geographic (SSURGO) Database & State Soil Geographic (STATSGO) Database (USGS, 2009+); and 12-digit Hydrologic Unit (HUCs) from the Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD), (March 2011). With regard to resolution, the land cover and wetness index data sets are at 30 meter resolution. The soils data sets are also at 30 meter resolution; however, they are expressed as a percentage of a variably sized, sample area polygon. Beyond indicating wetness, incorporation of the CTI also allowed for further narrowing within the poorly drained and very poorly drained soil polygons. These three layers were then combined, resulting in four categories: unsuitable, low potential, moderate potential, and high potential. Unsuitable areas did not meet one or more of the suitability requirements for land cover, wetness, or soil type. Low potential areas met the land cover requirement and were more likely to contain high levels of poorly drained or very poorly drained soils (80-101%). Moderate and high potential areas met the land cover requirement and were more likely to be sufficiently wet. The differentiation between moderate and high potential areas is in the percentage of poorly drained and/or very poorly drained soils (PVP). Areas with suitable land cover, wetness, and 1-79% PVP were considered to have moderate potential for wetland restoration. Areas with suitable land cover, wetness, and 80-101% PVP were considered to have high potential for wetland restoration. The low, moderate, and high potential categories were then summarized into a percentage of land cover, excluding water, for each 12-digit HUC subwatershed.
