The numerical model mesh covers a much larger computational domain which extends longitudinally from Mobile Bay, Alabama to west of Galveston Bay, Texas and offshore to ~ 300m-1000 m isobaths over the Alabama-Mississippi-Louisiana-Texas continental shelf and slope. Simulated hydrodynamic variables include sea level elevation, u- and v-velocity component, salinity, and turbulence parameters. The FVCOM simulation period is from 22 August 2016 to 31 August 2017. Output file is in NETCDF (Network Common Data Form) format, which is a set of software libraries and self-describing, machine-independent data formats that support the creation, access, and sharing of array-oriented scientific data. Output time interval is daily (at 00:00 GMT everyday). FVCOM modeling is used to 1) identify whether the high concentrations of DIN measured in the mid-Barataria Basin are derived from the GIWW and not from the Davis Pond diversion, 2) quantify inputs from the riverine (GIWW, Davis Pond) and from marine sources (saltwater intrusions), 3) assess the relative contributions of advective transport and dispersive transport to the TSS and DIN maxima observed in mid Barataria Basin during the flood season, and 4) elucidate the mechanism of dispersive TSS and DIN transport (cold front driven vs tidally driven) and their respective extent (e.g., the dispersive distance that each process is able to influence). Ultimately, the modeling will allow us to answer the question whether the region affected by the chemicals from the GIWW correlates with the zone of anomalous marsh edge erosion. FVCOM numerical experiments will be run for 2016-2017 (a large spring flood year), and 2021 (concurrent with field measurements).
