The offshore oil and gas industry uses synthetic based drilling muds (SBMs), which have carrier fluid made of synthetic materials that are designed to be less toxic and degrade faster in marine sediments than oil based drilling muds. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) recognized SBMs as a new class of drilling muds, and as part of the USEPA Region 6 National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) general permit, operators have elected to participate in a joint industry seabed survey.
