Experiments were conducted between 9/13/2022 and 12/6/2022. We measured endpoints (tissue regeneration, total lipids, total soluble protein, dry weight, symbiont chlorophyll a fluorescence and zooxanthellae numbers in gastrodermal tissues) and compared corals exposed to artificial seawater (control) to artificial seawater with sediment at 15 nephelometric turbidity units (NTU). We also measured sediment particle sizes within the treatment solutions. Corals were imaged throughout the exposure trials to document changes over time. Raw data are in image (.tif) format with results documented in spreadsheet format. The purpose of the work was to understand how longer-term (chronic) turbidity exposures from dredging impact two Endangered Species Act (ESA) ‘threatened’ stony coral species. We used cryomilled and dried sediments collected from Port Everglades, Florida to simulate a turbidity exposure from dredging. This project encompassed a single 12-week turbidity exposure with the coral species described above. We partnered with the Habitat Conservation Division, Southeast Region of the National Marine Fisheries Service and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to determine exposure scenarios that would be most helpful in ESA and Essential Fish Habitat consultations and for habitat protection.
