The seawater sample mixed with the titrant is stirred for three minutes with a stirring chip. Then a small volume of titrant (~0.1 ml) is injected until pH or e.m.f. reaches a given value. The concentration of the acid titrant is nominally 0.05 M HCl in 0.65 M NaCl. As the water flows through the equilibrator chamber, dissolved carbon dioxide exchanges quickly with air in the headspace.
