This data has been processed from the original directory to remove duplicate locations, as well as a small subsample (25 markets) were corrected by hand in order avoid duplication across block group boundaries. This dataset is contemporary as of 5/20/2016, and downloaded from the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) website. This dataset was produced by the US EPA to support research and online mapping activities related to EnviroAtlas. EnviroAtlas (https://www.epa.gov/enviroatlas) allows the user to interact with a web-based, easy-to-use, mapping application to view and analyze multiple ecosystem services for the contiguous United States. The purpose of this EnviroAtlas layer is to tabulate the availability of local Farmers Markets within a CBG. Farmers markets often fill a critical role in providing community access to fresh, local healthy food. According to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), "A lack of access to fresh, healthy foods can contribute to poor diets and higher levels of obesity and other diet-related diseases." Overweight individuals may experience higher rates of heart disease, diabetes, and other chronic conditions (https://www.usda.gov/documents/7-Healthyfoodaccess.pdf). Barriers to healthy food access can include income, distance to sources of healthy food -- such as supermarkets, and lack of transportation. The community access to local food was evaluated based on availability and accessibility of farmer's markets. The availability of local food for each census block group was determined by creating a spatial join with the farmers market locations using the geographic information system, ESRI's ArcGIS.
