For the purposes of this metric, industrial water use includes chemical, food, paper, wood, and metal production. The industrial water is for self-supplied only such as by private wells or reservoirs. Sources include either surface water or groundwater. This dataset was produced by the US EPA to support research and online mapping activities related to the EnviroAtlas. EnviroAtlas (https://www.epa.gov/enviroatlas) allows the user to interact with a web-based, easy-to-use, mapping application to view and analyze multiple ecosystem services for the contiguous United States. The dataset is available as downloadable data (https://edg.epa.gov/data/Public/ORD/EnviroAtlas) or as an EnviroAtlas map service. Additional descriptive information about each attribute in this dataset can be found in its associated EnviroAtlas Fact Sheet (https://www.epa.gov/enviroatlas/enviroatlas-fact-sheets). This data could be used in conjunction with other data to identify potential imbalances and trends between supply and demand. In areas with significant imbalances or detrimental trends, measures to further understand and alleviate pressure on the water supply could be implemented. These data represent the best available data. true Entity and Attribute Information Entity and Attribute Overview: The daily water demand for industry by 12-Digit HUC was estimated from combining industrial point data from Dun and Bradstreet datasets (www.dnb.com) with USGS 2010 county level estimated water use tables (wateruse.usgs.gov/wateruse/data/2010). Industrial point data included manufacturing and production commodities, such as food, paper, chemicals, wood products, and primary metals. Water use estimates are for fresh water, surface, and groundwater totals self supplied and 12% of public supply from USGS 2010 dataset. State averages were used where industrial points were located but no county values were given. Point files from Dun and Bradstreet dataset for different industrial categories (food, paper, chemicals, wood products, metals) were aggregated into one file using append function. Total Industrial water use (gallons/day) per county was calculated as the sum of Total Fresh water Industrial Self-Supplied (IN-FRTo) and 12% of Public Supply based on Wayne Solley et al. in 1998 estimates. Industrial sites were aligned with county boundaries using spatial join between the Dun and Bradstreet point and county boundary datasets. Where there was no county data the average state industrial water use per point (including self supplied and 12% of public supply) was assigned to the county. The total Industrial water use per county was divided by the number of facilities from Dun and Bradstreet within a county to get average water use per facility. The water use per point (MGal) was multiplied by 1 million to get gallons. Spatial join between points with water use was then used to link them to corresponding HUC_12s. The sum of total industrial water use was then calculated to get total gallons of water used per HUC_12.
