The protocol is modeled after the EPA's National Coastal Assessment Program (www.epa.gov/emap/nca) and it consists of conducting sediment sampling every 10 years based on a probabilistic sampling design that was also designed by the EPA. Thirty sites were selected within the Cumberland River, Mud Creek, Brickhill River, Cumberland Sound and St. Marys River at which sediments were sampled using a Van Veen sampler and composited for analysis as described in the National Coastal Assessment Quality Assurance Project Plan (www.epa.gov/emap/nca/html/docs/qaprojplan.html). The final analyses of the sediment samples were conducted by GPL Laboratories, LLC (now Centauri Labs); please refer to their website (www.centaurilabs.com) or the documents listed in the Cross Reference section for more information about the analytical process.
