This interbasin water exchange takes place mostly through mesoscale processes that occur when the Agulhas Current retroflects south of Africa between 15°E and 25°E. Estimates of the Agulhas Current are carried out by NOAA/AOML using satellite altimetry as the main dataset, and hydrographic observations.
