These observations support the GLERL Long-Term Ecological Research program. The M110 station is part of the Muskegon Transect in Lake Michigan near the NOAA Lake Michigan Field Station, Muskegon, MI. The first mooring, “M110”, is an oceanographic mooring containing a temperature string and an acoustic doppler current profiler approximately 200 meters from the temperature string. The second mooring, “M110X”, is a physical and biological mooring that collects temperature and fluorometer measurements over the winter. The approximate depth of this mooring location was 110 m. The M110 deployment’s temperature string collects vertical water temperatures at hourly time intervals at 16 depths by SeaBird and Tidbits thermistors. Current speed and direction were collected at sub-hourly time intervals at 49 depths by a Teledyne RDI WorkHorse acoustic doppler current profiler. The data files for this mooring contain the station name “noaa-glerl-michigan-lter-m110-” in the file name. The physical and biological mooring collects surface and bottom temperature and fluorometer measurements hourly. The temperature sensors were Sea-Bird 39. The Wet Labs fluorometers measured voltage, which were converted to chlorophyll concentrations. Please see the “Supplemental Information” for more information about the chlorophyll concentrations. The data files for this mooring contain the station name “noaa-glerl-michigan-lter-m110x-” in the file name. All measurements were collected continuously during this time period. Included in this data package are two data formats, netCDF and CSV. Metadata is included in the netCDF file, the CSV files also contain a data dictionary explaining the column headings. The GLERL Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) program integrates a core set of long-term observations on biological, chemical, and physical variables with process-based studies. These observations serve as the foundation for developing new concepts and modeling tools to explore impacts of various stressors on the ecosystem (e.g., invasive species, climate change, nutrient loading, overfishing). Long-term observations also provide a foundation for evaluating changes in ecosystems where there could be a significant time lag between cause and effect; such information is essential for management of an environment. NOAA-GLERL has maintained the LTER program for the waters near the Lake Michigan Field Station, Muskegon, MI since the 1970s. We have collected biological (zooplankton, chlorophyll) and water chemistry (nutrients) samples at offshore sites dating back to the 1970s, with the most extensive and complete data sets dating back to the 1980s. This data was then converted to chlorophyll fluorescence by applying linear scaling constants. The fluorometers deployed at this location were calibrated by the manufacturer WetLabs, in December of 2019 using a Thalassiora weissflogii phytoplankton culture. The characterization sheets for each instrument are included in this data accession. No further calibrations for freshwater environments or specific chlorophyll species were performed in our Laboratory prior to deployment. The fluorometer chlorophyll values should be used as approximate values to understand trends in chlorophyll over the deployment period. Do not use the fluorometer chlorophyll values as exact values, as actual environmental conditions will affect the calibration scaling constants. NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information custodian ADCP ADCP Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler The Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) measures currents beneath a ship while underway. Sound signals sent from the moving ship bounce back to receivers aboard the ship. This provides a profile of water movement relative to the ship-precise modern navigation, allowing the ship's motion to be subtracted from the data. These devices are also used on moorings and profilers and, along with acoustic backscattering, measure animal biomass. Particles in the path of the sound waves, mostly plankton, reflect a small part of the sound energy back toward receivers, allowing researchers to make remote estimates of the sizes and numbers of animals present in the water column. Before the 1970's, the most technologically advanced instrument used to measure water velocity was known as a Doppler speed log. This evolved into the first commercial ADCP, produced in the mid-1970's, which used averaging. Later in the 1970's, the first vessel-mounted ADCP was developed to measure water velocity more accurately and to allow measurement in range cells over a depth profile. As instruments evolved, so did new techniques in Doppler signal processing. Initially, Doppler speed logs used simple analog signal processing methods, which are still used in some commercial speed logs today. However, the first ADCPs incorporated analog-to-digital signal conversion over a narrow communication bandwidth. Around 1990, this technique was developed into broadband signal processing.
