Reliability Quality control was performed by the originator. NCEI performed basic out-of-range location testing and checked total phi weight percentages. The grain size data for 06105001 were deemed grossly in error. These data were contributed by the originator to NOAA's former National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC) and may be part of a larger compilation archived as oceanographic data by NCEI. Data for MGG06105001 were received in 1976 on nine track magnetic tape, ASCII form, 80 character records blocked to 4000 characters per block. File contents: 1) 073 data cruise BLM-STG 001-274 with gross errors; 2-4) grain size data not in 073 format, OCS-6001-G274, OCS-B016-G273, OCS-W107-246B; 5) Appendix 2; 6) clay mineralogy; 7) trace metals from surficial sediments; 8) trace metals from suspended sediments. STOCS data comprised files 11 through 35 of the tape and included 15,175 lines of 073 grain size data with no major errors, so were processed into the grain size database. From 1975 through the 1980s, most sediment data collected as part of offshore environmental baseline and/or habitat studies were part of a suite of measurements sent to NODC or NODC liasons. NODC data managers, primarily Francis Mitchel, then sent the sediment-related data (e.g., physical properties, composition, geochemstry, mineralogy) to the former NGDC as the authoritative archive and distribution point for sediment data.
