Still images and video were captured using an automatic camera system called Eye-in-the-Sea. This battery-powered camera system uses a red light-emitting diode (LED), which deep-sea animals can't see, in combination with a low-light-level (LLL) camera. Fluorescence imaging and light characterization (spectral data) using a sensitive spectrometer was also conducted directly from the Johnson-Sea-Link submersible. This dataset is available to the public for a wide variety of uses including scientific research and analysis.
