It also includes (1) wave climate data created through hydrodynamic modeling and frequency analysis of historic data, (2) model outputs of shorelines prioritized for stabilization/restoration, created by combining hydrodynamic data and shoreline data, and (3) model outputs of shoreline hydrodynamic habitat suitability for mangroves. Shoreline survey data were coupled with a hydrodynamic wave model to provide a more complete picture of forcing conditions in the study area. The likelihood of observing mangrove vegetation under a given wave climate was estimated using observed mangrove distributions and modeled wave heights, with results designed for use in restoration site selection. This project created a living shoreline restoration prioritization model and a mangrove hydrodynamic habitat suitability model for 180 miles of estuarine shorelines in north Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon. The shoreline survey methodology was developed by St. Johns River Water Management for northeastern Florida and was adapted for applications in Brevard and Volusia Counties. Between November 2017 through June 2018, shoreline evaluations were completed at transects located every 30 m in developed areas and every 100 to 300 m of shoreline in undeveloped regions, based on frequency of transitions to different habitats or armoring type (156 miles total). Transects were recorded less frequently if shoreline structure remained unchanged for extended distances (i.e. continuous seawalls, mosquito impoundment dikes). Transects were recorded more often in areas where shoreline habitat or armoring type changed frequently, in order to document each transition for GIS mapping of shoreline conditions. Model inputs included local reanalysis wind data (North American Land Data Assimilation System; 1979-2018: hourly), water levels observed at the Haulover Canal gauge (USGS 02248380, 2010-2018), bathymetry (resolution: 1/9 arc-second), and the precise borders of the lagoon shorelines and all vegetated islands as delineated based on 2017 imagery. Modelled wave heights were integrated with the long-term historical wind time series to generate cumulative wave-climate distributions throughout the study region (10th – 99th percentile wave heights).; Data Quality Method: Modelled wave heights were validated using coupled wind-wave measurements collected at a monitoring station in Mosquito Lagoon. Parameter or Variable: Restoration Priority (Priority) (calculated); Units: none; Observation Category: other; Sampling Instrument: none; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Priority’ represents model outputs of restoration need, based on presence or absence of hardened structures and wetland vegetation, erosion severity, and slope. 0= Hardened Shoreline: Shorelines with hardened structures were assumed to be a stabilized shoreline for prioritization evaluation. 1= Wetland: Shorelines classified as Wetland have wetland vegetation, a slope at or below the maximum wetland slope (0.2) and were not actively eroding during shoreline surveys. 2= Vulnerable: Shorelines classified as Vulnerable currently have wetland vegetation within the intertidal zone, but either have a slope above a critical value or had evidence of moderate to severe erosion (categories 1 and 2) during shoreline surveys. 3= Priority: Shorelines classified as Priority are expected to deteriorate in the future without restoration and either contain no intertidal wetland vegetation or contain wetland vegetation but are above a critical slope and had evidence of moderate to severe erosion (categories 1 and 2) during shoreline surveys. 4 & 5= Urgent: Shorelines classified as Urgent are in need of immediate stabilization/restoration and have no hardened structure, contain no intertidal wetland vegetation and had evidence of moderate to severe erosion (categories 1 and 2) during shoreline surveys. The prioritization model ranked shorelines according to urgency of stabilization by evaluating presence or absence of hard armoring, presence or absence of wetland vegetation, erosion, and intertidal slope. Shorelines with probabilities greater than 50% represent habitat suitable for mangrove vegetation. The habitat suitability model indicates the probability of persistence of mangrove vegetation on a shoreline based on site-specific wave climates. These probabilities were estimated using a univariate logistic regression model fit to modelled wave heights and observed mangrove distributions.
