This dataset was produced by the US EPA to support research and online mapping activities related to the EnviroAtlas. Used together or independently, these maps can help identify the estimated demand for recreational activity to inform decisions about land conservation for hunting, fishing or bird watching. These data are limited to individuals over the age of 18 taking day trips for big game hunting. This layer does not provide information about individuals taking over-night trips. Willingness to travel for big game hunting was calculated using visitor use data from National Forest and Grassland sites and therefore might not be representative of people who hunt on state or private land. Also, these data did not take into account infrastructure or geographical features (i.e. roads, cities, recreational destinations, restricted areas, etc.). Therefore, recreation demand may be higher or lower in certain areas depending on the proximity of recreation destinations and ease of access. Modeled data are intended to complement rather than replace monitoring data. This recreation demand model does not provide information on the actual amount of recreation in an area, but rather predicts the expected demand for big game hunting in a given location. true Entity and Attribute Information Entity and Attribute Overview: This dataset shows distributed days demanded for big game hunting. In general terms, the recreation demand for big game hunting was determined by creating a kernel density dispersion model using the EnviroAtlas 2011 dasymetric population data. Participation rates per demographic group for big game hunting were determined using phone survey data collected by the US Fish and Wildlife Service Fishing, Hunting and Wildlife-Associated Recreation (FHWAR) survey (USFWS, 2011). Willingness to travel by each participant was determined using the National Visitor Use Monitoring (NVUM) program (USDA Forest Services, 2011) which provided information on distance traveled for big game hunting day trips. The participation rates were applied to the population data to determine the number of days individuals would participate in big game hunting. Those days demanded were then distributed using a probability function of willingness to travel to create the distributed days demanded for big game hunting. To represent the results in the EnviroAtlas, the data were summarized by 12-digit HUC.
