This area encompasses all or part of\nBlaine, Caddo, Canadian, Comanche, Custer, Dewey, Grady,\nStephens, and Washita Counties. For the purposes of modeling\nthe ground-water flow in the Rush Springs aquifer, Mark F.\nBecker (U.S. Geological Survey, written commun., 1997)\ndefined the Rush Springs aquifer to include the Rush Springs\nFormation, alluvial and terrace deposits along major streams,\nand parts of the Marlow Formations, particularly in the\neastern part of the aquifer boundary area.\nThe Permian-age Rush Springs Formation consists of highly\ncross-bedded sandstone with some interbedded dolomite and\ngypsum. The Rush Springs Formation is overlain by\nQuaternary-age alluvial and terrace deposits that consist of\nunconsolidated clay, silt, sand, and gravel. The Rush Springs\nFormation is underlain by the Permian-age Marlow Formation\nthat consists of interbedded sandstones, siltstones,\nmudstones, gypsum-anhydrite, and dolomite beds (Mark F.\nBecker, written commun., 1997). The parts of the Marlow\nFormation that have high permeability and porosity are where\nthe Marlow Formation is included as part of the Rush Springs\naquifer.\nThe Rush Springs aquifer underlies about 2,400 square miles\nof western Oklahoma and is an important source of water for\nirrigation, livestock, industrial, municipal, and domestic\nuse. Irrigation wells are reported to have well yields\ngreater than 1,000 gallons per minute (Mark F. Becker,\nwritten commun., 1997).\nThe hydraulic conductivity values used by Mark F. Becker\n(written commun., 1997) to simulate the ground-water flow in\nthe Rush Springs aquifer are 0.8, 2.0, 4.0, 8.0, and 10.0\nfeet per day. The hydraulic conductivity values are based on\nspecific capacity data and aquifer tests. Mark F. Becker\ncreated some of the hydraulic conductivity data set by\ndigitizing parts of previously published surficial geology\nmaps.\nGround-water flow models are numerical representations that\nsimplify and aggregate natural systems. Models are not\nunique; different combinations of aquifer characteristics may\nproduce similar results.
