The dataset includes predicted fish biomass from the Ecopath with Ecosim and Ecospace model set up over the Florida Reef Tract, during eight scenarios and across 36 trophic groups during the time period between 1994 and 2012. Simulations considered all pairwise combinations of changing the size of Marine Protected Areas (‘existing MPAs’, ‘large MPAs’), varying rates of movement via modeled diffusion (‘low diffusion’, ‘high diffusion’), and increasing fishing effort (total effect multiplier; ‘low TEM’, ‘high TEM’). The project “Evaluation of Gulf of Mexico oceanographic observation networks, impact assessment on ecosystem management and recommendations” aims at evaluating how oceanographic observations of the Gulf of Mexico can support ecosystem management. This is performed by the combined use of modeling and observations. Our focus area is the Florida Keys, which are influenced by the Gulf of Mexico conditions and host a large National Marine Sanctuary where ecosystem management is essential. Comprehensive science needs in South Florida call for tools to assess the effectiveness of marine protected areas (MPAs) and inform exploited species management. We constructed a 36-trophic group ecosystem model for managed portions of the Florida Reef Tract and used the Ecospace spatio-temporal model framework to evaluate different model outcomes due to changing the size of MPAs, varying rates of movement via modeled diffusion, and increasing fishing effort. Additionally, the recent expansion of spatio-temporal capabilities in Ecospace enabled us to evaluate ecosystem scenarios in the context of functional responses to dynamic and static environmental covariates.
