All national data layers, such as the NLCD and WBD, are inherently imperfect; they are an estimation of the truth based on the best available science. Calculations based on these data are, therefore, also estimations. The NLCD is estimating land cover based on a classification of satellite imagery; the process of classifying imagery into land cover types is not 100% accurate. The user needs to be aware that the mapped data are by no means perfect and can only be used to inform further investigation. National data layers continue to improve and periodic updates to the Atlas will reflect those improvements. Correcting or improving the data sets is beyond the purview of this Atlas project. Accuracy information for the source data sets can be found on their respective web sites. true Entity and Attribute Information Entity and Attribute Overview: This metric was generated using the EPA's landscape assessment tool, Analytical Tools Interface for Landscape Assessments (ATtILA, www.epa.gov/esd/land-sci/attila), in conjunction with the 2006 National Land Cover Data (NLCD, www.mrlc.gov) and the March 2011 Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD, www.nhd.usgs.gov/wbd.html). The NLCD's "developed" categories (classes 21-24) were aggregated, resulting in the percent urban land cover. Water was excluded from the total area in the percentage calculation. For more information on this calculation, please see the ATtILA User's Manual. Each hydrologic unit polygon has associated attributes stored in tabular format. An attribute, also called a field or column, is defined by name, type, size, and valid values. For this layer these attributes are the 12-digit hydrologic unit code and the percentage urban development land cover.
