NOAA supports continual scientific research of the wreck for the sake of advancing knowledge of in situ preservation and degradation rate. Throughout its endeavors with Titanic, NOAA intends to promote full participation with other federal agencies, and academic and research institutions with respect to exploration and research of the wreck site. An eleven-day cruise to the Titanic wreck site will be conducted aboard the Russian science vessel R/V Akademik Mstislav Keldysh in conjunction with Deep Ocean Expeditions (DOE). A majority of the cruise time will be allocated to Jim Cameron’s staff for filming purposes. However, NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration (OE) has acquired two days of operation time with use of the vessel’s MIR submersibles. The goals for these two days are to assess the wreck site in its current condition and provide an opportunity to conduct scientific observations supporting on-going research. Various members of the maritime archaeology and science communities have been asked to participate in order to lend their expertise and knowledge to this short expedition. RV Akademik Mstislav Keldysh 2012-01-18 creation RV Akademik Mstislav Keldysh The Research Vessel (R/V) Akademik Mstislav Keldysh was built by Hollming OY of Finland and is owned and operated by the Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The homeport of this globally ranging vessel is Kaliningrad. The Keldysh was launched in 1981. Since then, it has supported many scientific and exploratory voyages. The Keldysh measures 122 m in length and 17.8 m of beam (width). It displaces 6,240 tons of water. Normal cruising speed for the vessel is 10.5 knots, with a maximum speed of 12.5 knots. The ship has a cruising range of 20,000 nautical miles and is propelled by four 1,460-hp diesel engines. It is equipped with sophisticated satellite navigation and communication equipment. To support submersibles and instrumentation, the ship has 15 winches, 4 cranes and an A-Frame.
