Vacant buildings are included if they remained vacant for more than one year. Data were compiled from the United States Postal Service (USPS) Vacant Address Data. This dataset was produced by the US EPA to support research and online mapping activities related to EnviroAtlas. EnviroAtlas (https://www.epa.gov/enviroatlas) allows the user to interact with a web-based, easy-to-use, mapping application to view and analyze multiple ecosystem services for the contiguous United States. The dataset is available as downloadable data (https://edg.epa.gov/data/Public/ORD/EnviroAtlas) or as an EnviroAtlas map service. This data layer records the total number of vacant business addresses for each Census tract. It can be used to study the extent and pattern of vacancies, both locally and for the conterminous US. In addition, researchers from government and private sectors can use this data layer to further investigate causes of local vacancy problems. For instance, this data layer can be used with socioeconomic data to examine whether/how vacancy is associated with socioeconomic factors (e.g. household income level, age, and employment) (Nassauer and Raskin, 2014). Secondly, vacancy data can also be examined together with environmental factors (e.g. land use types, or green space) to see whether there is any interaction between the natural environment and vacancy phenomena. Thirdly, temporal changes of the vacancy rate can be investigated, and causes for temporal changes can also be analyzed.
