This dataset has been generated in near-real time during the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Event in order to provide users a quick view on the sea level change and wave activity in the Gulf of Mexico though it is under a global coverage. All of the observations within 5 days are interpolated into 0.25 longitude degree and 0.25 latitude degree uniform grid. The OSTM/Jason-2 observations are select Interim Geophysical Data Records (IGDR) which are archived under NCEI Accession 0043269. The Jason-1 satellite IGDR data are from the JPL/NASA PO.DAAC, from ftp://podaac.jpl.nasa.gov/pub/sea_surface_height/jason/igdr_ssha_netCDF/data/. Above original data have been processed, gridded, visualized and finally converted into NetCDF format by scientists in NODC's satellite oceanography group. The AMR measures water vapor content in the atmosphere so that we can determine how it impacts radar signal propagation. Its measurements can also be used directly for studying other atmospheric phenomena, particularly rain. Jason-2 data are being archived by the NODC as part of the Comprehensive Large Array-data Stewardship System (CLASS) DORIS DORIS Doppler Orbitography and Radiopositioning Integrated from Space The DORIS system uses a ground network of orbitography beacons spread around the globe, which send signals at two frequencies to a receiver on the satellite. The relative motion of the satellite generates a shift in the signal's frequency (called the Doppler shift) that is measured to derive the satellite's velocity. These data are then assimilated in orbit determination models to keep permanent track of the satellite's precise position (to within three centimetres) on its orbit. Jason-2 is a French-U.S. satellite launched in 2008 designed to measure rising sea levels and track the effects of climate change. Jason-2 data are being archived by the NODC as part of the Comprehensive Large Array-data Stewardship System (CLASS). GPSP GPSP Global Positioning System space Payload The GPSP uses the Global Positioning System (GPS) to determine the satellite's position by triangulation, in the same way that GPS fixes are obtained on Earth. At least three GPS satellites determine a mobile object's (in this case the satellite's) exact position at a given instant. Positional data are then integrated into an orbit determination model to track the satellite's trajectory continuously. The Poseidon-3 altimeter is a compact, low-power, low-mass instrument offering a high degree of reliability. Poseidon-3 is a radar altimeter that emits pulses at two frequencies (13.6 and 5.3 GHz; the second frequency is used to determine the electron content in the atmosphere) and analyzes the return signal reflected by the surface. The four mission participants are: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (US NOAA), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (US NASA), Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (FRANCE CNES), and European Meteorological Satellite Organisation (EU EUMETSAT). JASON-2 was built under direction from CNES. After launch by NASA, CNES and NASA transferred operation and control of the JASON-2 platform to NOAA. The Jason-2 satellite was launched in June 20, 2008. Submitted to ICES on 2014-06-04. Confirmed by NOAA on 2018-08-08. After more than 11 years in orbit and well beyond its three- to five-year mission baseline, the Ocean Surface Topography Mission (OSTM) on Jason-2 permanently ceased acquisition of scientific data at 06:48 UTC on 1 October 2019 due to aging-related issues onboard the spacecraft.
