Ground water in 830 square miles of the Quaternary-age\nalluvial and terrace aquifer is an important source of water for\nirrigation, industrial, municipal, stock, and domestic supplies.\nThe aquifer consists of poorly sorted, fine to coarse,\nunconsolidated quartz sand with minor amounts of clay, silt, and\nbasal gravel. The hydraulically connected alluvial and terrace\ndeposits unconformably overlie the Tertiary-age Ogallala\nFormation and Permian-age formations.\n\t\t\nThe aquifer boundaries established in a ground-water flow model\nfor the aquifer include areas: 1) where the terrace deposits\npinch out against relatively impermeable Permian-age formations;\n2) where the alluvium has been deposited against relatively\nimpermeable Permian-age formations; 3) where the alluvial and\nterrace deposits have been eroded and underlying Permian-age\nformations are exposed at the surface; 4) where the aquifer\nextends beyond the geographic limit of the study area; and 5)\nwhere the aquifer has little or no saturated thickness.\n\t\t\nThe lines in the data set representing aquifer boundaries\nalong geological contacts were extracted from a published\ndigital surficial geology data set based on a scale of\n1:250,000.
