Samples were taken before dredging (sampling on 11.15.20) and after dredging (sampling on 3.16.21). A suite of organic and inorganic parameters were quantified at 18 targeted sites on coral reefs near the port. Contaminants quantified included: polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and trace elements (including heavy metals). Sediment grain size was also quantified. This is NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program project #31306. Water quality problems, including those associated with coastal construction and dredging, are a major threat to coral reefs worldwide, especially in near shore reefs. The benthic disruption associated with dredging projects not only leads to increases in turbidity and sedimentation but can re-introduce previously buried pollutants into the ecosystem. Organic and inorganic chemical contaminants have a wide range of potential negative impacts on the marine environment, including on the health, development and reproduction of corals. The data presented here can be utilized by coastal managers to best prioritize management strategies in a way to maximize success in decreasing stressors on coral reef ecosystems.
