The following\r\nresearch questions served as a guide in developing the risk\r\nassessment instrument: (1) Does the instrument measure what it\r\npurports to measure? (2) Do similar cases receive similar\r\nrecommendations for placement services? (3) Is the instrument fair to\r\ndissimilar groups? (4) Is the instrument useful to practitioners?\r\nand (5) Will the instrument be simple to implement? The goal of the\r\nnew risk assessment instrument was to address the relative risk of\r\nrecidivism without taking into account the severity of the current\r\noffense. In order to develop a new risk assessment instrument,\r\nresearchers adapted a pre-existing instrument that had been used and\r\nvalidated with juvenile probationers in California. The new\r\ninstrument was used to evaluate youths for three measures of\r\nrecidivism: intake actions, petitions filed, and petitions sustained\r\nthrough one year after the placement decisions were made. The sample\r\nof youths was comprised of those who in 1996 had received either a\r\nfield supervision or a placement order as a disposition. The\r\ninstrument measured age at first finding, prior criminal behavior,\r\ninstitutional commitments or placement of 30 consecutive days or\r\nmore, drug/chemical use, alcohol use, parental skills, school\r\ndisciplinary problems, and peer relationships.", "distribution": [{"@type": "dcat:Distribution", "accessURL": "https://doi.org/10.3886/ICPSR03254.v1", "title": "Validation of a Risk Assessment Instrument for Juvenile Probationers in Alameda County, California, 1996  "}], "identifier": "3356", "issued": "2001-12-14T00:00:00", "keyword": ["criminal histories", "juvenile offenders", "juveniles", "postrelease programs", "probation services", "probationers", "recidivism", "risk assessment"], "language": ["eng"], "license": "http://www.usa.gov/publicdomain/label/1.0/", "modified": "2001-12-14T00:00:00", "programCode": ["011:060"], "publisher": {"@type": "org:Organization", "name": "National Institute of Justice", "subOrganizationOf": {"acronym": "OJP", "id": 22, "name": "Office of Justice Programs", "parentOrganization": {"acronym": "DOJ", "id": 10, "name": "Department of Justice"}, "parentOrganizationID": 10}}, "title": "Validation of a Risk Assessment Instrument for Juvenile Probationers in Alameda County, California, 1996  "}
