Applied Signal Technology (AST) has combined their SAS with the MacArtney FOCUS-2 ROTV to create the ultimate towed acoustic imaging device, PROSAS Surveyor. Capable of an area coverage rate of 2.5 kilometer/hour with a resolution of 3 centimeters, PROSAS Surveyor will greatly expand capabilities to locate even the oldest archaeological sites on the continental shelf, particularly where sedimentation is limited. Large area seafloor mapping at a resolution capable of imaging very small targets is a tremendously expensive proposition for submerged land managers responsible for bottom lands from 30 to 300 meters in depth. Daily operating costs for a suitable research vessel and personnel limit the area that can be investigated. This project will for the first time apply commercially available SAS technology to the search for historic shipwrecks. The rapidity and resolution of this project's survey will be as much as a four-fold increase in area covered as compared to conventional marine archaeological remote sensing survey. This project seeks to locate historically-significant shipwrecks from the earliest days of European settlement in New England utilizing a highly advanced synthetic aperture sonar (SAS) mounted on a remotely operated tow vehicle (ROTV). Located at the mouth of Massachusetts Bay, the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary is a repository for historic shipwrecks. Archaeological research has located thirty-five historic shipwrecks since 2000; historically reported vessel losses in the sanctuary's vicinity number several hundred. Archaeological remote sensing survey has only investigated five percent of the sanctuary's seafloor, leaving a tremendous area in which new discoveries may be made. The project's strategy is to map a 200 square-kilometer area on the approaches to some of America's oldest ports. During the past 350 years, the ports of Gloucester, Salem, Marblehead, and Boston have lost numerous vessels just offshore. Shipwreck densities are expected to increase in the immediate vicinity of these ports. The project survey area offers one of the best opportunities to locate vessels from the earliest periods of American history.
