Casts were conducted using remotely-operated vehicle (ROV) -mounted CTD instruments at project sampling sites located in the Northern Gulf of Mexico (GoM) at depths between 50-2200m, from De Soto Canyon to the Flower Garden Banks, and further south to Keathley Canyon. Each cast contains water downcast and upcast column profile data (conductivity, temperature, and pressure) corresponding to the descent and ascent of the ROV in each dive. These CTD casts were conducted to characterize the environmental parameters associated with samples collected during this project. The project Population Connectivity of Deepwater Corals in the Northern Gulf of Mexico aims to address crucial gaps in the understanding of the processes that shape population connectivity patterns in habitat-forming deepwater and mesophotic corals in the GoM, including species directly impacted by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. This project addresses the fundamental question: To what degree are populations of deepwater corals connected in the northern GoM? Target coral species occur at three depth ranges: mesophotic (50-150 m), upper continental slope (400-1100 m), and lower continental slope (1300-2400 m). Specifically, this project aims to: 1) define spatial scales of coral population genetic structure and differentiation; 2) infer directionality and relative rate of genetic exchange among coral populations to establish source/sink relationships; and 3) integrate outcomes from predictive models of larval dispersal with genetic data to estimate dispersal distances and connectivity patterns. To achieve these objectives, this project quantifies population connectivity in deepwater coral species through the integration of field sampling, state-of-the-art population genomic analyses and physical oceanographic modeling approaches. The work for this project is developed in close communication with managers to plan research activities and disseminate results. This collaborative effort explicitly links basic research that will enhance the understanding of GoM ecosystems with concrete restoration and conservation initiatives to ensure recovery of degraded deepwater coral communities. The ROV dives took place at depths between 65-2200m, at sites within the Northern Gulf of Mexico, as far east as DeSoto Canyon, as far south and west as Keathley Canyon, and as far north as Roughtongue Reef. CTD data were collected using a Seabird Electronics SBE19 system. Data were recorded by the unit and downloaded after each dive (no real time data). No water sampling bottles were part of this system. The sensor attached to the CTD included: conductivity, temperature, and pressure. Only raw-data *.hex data files were available for this cruise, which are not included in this accession; image plots of the CTD casts for this cruise are included. For the RESTORE MT18 cruise, the CTD system was mounted on the frame of ROV Mohawk (operated by the University of North Carolina–Wilmington’s Undersea Vehicle Program and owned by the National Marine Sanctuaries Foundation), which was deployed from the NOAA Ship R/V Manta.
