Cleaning up and reinvesting in these properties takes development pressures off of undeveloped, open land, and both improves and protects the environment. CIMC provides information on Brownfields properties for which information is reported back to EPA, as well as areas served by Brownfields grants programs. Brownfields properties may be mapped or listed, and property profiles can be accessed from either maps or lists. There are many properties that meet the definition of a brownfield but are not funded by our program. They may be funded by states, localities, private or non-profit entities. The Brownfields data are reported by grant recipients via the ACRES database and updated and stored in Envirofacts monthly. The CIMC web service was initially published in 2013, but the data are updated twice a month. This web service was developed for the CIMC web application, which provides the public with access to data from numerous cleanup programs, although it is generally more broadly applicable. Accidents, spills, leaks, and past improper disposal and handling of hazardous materials and wastes have resulted in tens of thousands of sites across our country that have contaminated our land, water (groundwater and surface water), and air (indoor and outdoor). EPA and its state and territorial partners have developed a variety of cleanup programs to assess and, where necessary, clean up these contaminated sites. The processes used to collect location information for each type of data are as follows: Incidents of National Significance are derived from the official epa.gov web pages for each incident. Locations are collected for each incident individually, and may have varying accuracy. In the case where the original EPA pages did not provide a lat/long, a coordinate was placed manually based on the description provided about the site. Location information for Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) data are initially entered by the regulated facility. Location information for Brownfields data are originally entered by the Brownfields grantee. Location information for Superfund data are initially entered by the remedial project manager for each superfund site. Location information for Emergency Responses are initially entered by the On Scene Coordinator for each response. After initial data entry using the methods described above, locations are verified using a detailed process called the Facility Registry System (FRS) "Best Pick" Process. This process uses a number of routines and algorithms to validate location data for each site and to select the best location.
