The water-level elevation data set was\ncreated to be used as input into a computer model to simulate\nthe ground-water flow in the Rush Springs aquifer. In the\nground-water flow model, Mark F. Becker (U.S. Geological\nSurvey, written commun., 1997) defined the Rush Springs\naquifer to include the Rush Springs Formation, alluvial and\nterrace deposits along major streams, and parts of the Marlow\nFormations, particularly in the eastern part of the aquifer\nboundary area.\nThe Permian-age Rush Springs Formation consists of highly\ncross-bedded sandstone with some interbedded dolomite and\ngypsum. The Rush Springs Formation is overlain by\nQuaternary-age alluvial and terrace deposits that consist of\nunconsolidated clay, silt, sand, and gravel. The Rush Springs\nFormation is underlain by the Permian-age Marlow Formation\nthat consists of interbedded sandstones, siltstones,\nmudstones, gypsum-anhydrite, and dolomite beds. The parts of\nthe Marlow Formation that have high permeability and porosity\nare where the Marlow Formation is included as part of the\nRush Springs aquifer (Mark F. Becker, written commun.,\n1997).\nThe Rush Springs aquifer underlies about 2,400 square miles\nof western Oklahoma and is an important source of water for\nirrigation, livestock, industrial, municipal, and domestic\nuse. Irrigation wells are reported to have well yields\ngreater than 1,000 gallons per minute (Mark F. Becker,\nwritten commun., 1997).\nThe water-level elevation data set was prepared at a scale of\n1:250,000 by Mark F. Becker (written commun., 1997) from\nwater levels measured in wells prior to the year 1950 that\nrepresented \"pre-development\" water-level conditions.\nPre-development is a term used to indicate a time\nbefore many irrigation wells were constructed in the Rush\nSprings aquifer. The digital data set contains water-level\nelevations that range from 1,200 to 1,850 feet above sea\nlevel or the National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929\n(NGVD29) (Mark F.
