Patients randomly received cisapride\n\t\t\t\t(10 mg, via nasogastric tube) one day and a placebo the other. Bronchial\n\t\t\t\tsecretions were obtained before and for 5 consecutive h after Tc-99 m\n\t\t\t\tadministration. The radioactivity was measured in a standard amount (1ml) of\n\t\t\t\tbronchial fluid using a gamma counter and expressed as counts per min (cpm)\n\t\t\t\tafter correction for decay.\n        \n        \n          Results:\n          Sixteen out of 18 (88%) patients had increased radioactivity in\n\t\t\t\tbronchial secretions. The radioactivity increased over time both with and\n\t\t\t\twithout cisapride, although it was lower in patients receiving cisapride than\n\t\t\t\tin those receiving a placebo. The cumulative bronchial secretion radioactivity\n\t\t\t\tobtained when patients received cisapride was significantly lower than when\n\t\t\t\tpatients received a placebo: 7540 \u00b1 5330 and 21965 \u00b1 16080 cpm,\n\t\t\t\trespectively (P <0.05).\n        \n        \n          Conclusion:\n          Our results suggest that aspiration of gastric contents exists\n\t\t\t\teven in patients who are kept in a semirecumbent position. Moreover, cisapride\n\t\t\t\tdecreases the amount of gastric contents aspiration in intubated and\n\t\t\t\tmechanically ventilated patients and may play a role in the prevention of\n\t\t\t\tventilator associated pneumonia.
