The data were collected in 2022 as a part of the Mesophotic and Deep Benthic Communities (MDBC): CPT and HAE Projects. These projects were a few of many selected by the Open Ocean Trustee Implementation Group to restore natural resources injured by the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Twenty-three remotely operated vehicle (ROV) dives were conducted at twelve sites during the cruise. ROV operations were conducted to sample and survey sites for husbandry and genetics. Live coral fragments were collected for propagation at federal labs. Coral snips were also collected for microbiology, population genetics, taxonomic barcoding, and reproduction data. CTD rosette casts were conducted daily with water sampling for husbandry and environmental DNA, also known as eDNA. Data loggers were deployed to monitor temperature and currents, and one data sensor that had been previously deployed by a separate project to monitor light and temperature parameters was recovered. Highlight videos were collected for outreach and education purposes as well. Additional related processed data products may also be included in this collection as they are submitted to the NCEI archive. The purpose of this dataset is to consolidate and summarize all CTD data collected during PS-22-22 in June of 2022, to visualize the water column and patterns of water chemistry. The information collected in the field will be used to understand temperature, oxygen, and light levels in the natural environment of the mesophotic octocorals injured by the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill. The environmental data parameters will serve as reference points and be applied to laboratory husbandry studies to support coral propagation and benthic restoration of the Gulf of Mexico. MDBC CPT and HAE project expeditions are designed to conduct coral restoration and habitat characterization activities in mesophotic and deep zones of the northern Gulf of Mexico, to support laboratory-based husbandry and propagation. The work performed at sea during this cruise was focused on visual surveys for benthic habitat assessment, targeted sampling of the biota, and detailed characterization of the water column. Among the primary goals of this expedition were to collect live samples of corals for shoreside partners engaged in studies related to octocoral husbandry; and to identify large aggregations of octocorals for future in-situ propagation work. Fifty one transects were conducted by the ROV. The visual surveys were 300-m strip-transect lines conducted over hard and soft bottom habitats. The purpose of these surveys was to characterize habitat, identify sampling targets, and verify existing models of bathymetry (Nash and Randall, 2015) and habitat suitability for corals (Silva and Macdonald, 2017). The purpose of the coral sampling was to support live animal husbandry, as well as studies of biology for population genetics, microbiology, and reproduction. The response of the instrument falls sharply to zero on either side of this band, and between 400 and 670 nm it increases monotonically from about 50% to 100%. There is no protective glass dome over the receiving surface. Irradiance from the sun passes through a small white visible bandpass filter/diffuser in the shape of a horizontal disk at the top of the instrument.
