The areas include all Reservations associated with Federally recognized tribal entities. Changes: May 28, 2026: Two new tribes that share the Wind River reservation boundaries are Northern Arapaho Tribe of the Wind River Reservation, Wyoming and Eastern Shoshone Tribe of the Wind River Reservation, Wyoming. The tribe that has a different boundary name in the 2025 Census geodatabase is Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. Census changed it to Qualla Boundary. In addition, three reservation entities were removed due to their Census class code as "D0". See the document of "EPA Geospatial Tribal Data 2026 Update" for the details. This layer is used to support EPA's analysis of regulated facilities, and environmental monitoring stations with regard to existence on or near Tribal lands. The relationships between Tribal Areas and Tribal Entities were built during earlier work by EPA's American Indian Environmental Office (AIEO) while developing the Tribal Information Management System (TIMS), and updated to account for the latest Tribal Area and Tribal Entity additions. There is a new tribe called Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina that was federally recognized on January 31, 2026 by the Lumbee Fairness Act. However, it was not available in the Census boundaries data. The Census tribal boundaries data is updated every fall. This was cross-checked by EPA and Census confirmed Qualla Boundary is for the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians tribe. A note for the change was added to the dataset, shown in the Name_History column. Three entities of Kickapoo Tribe of Indians of the Kickapoo Reservation in Kansas (100000126), Pueblo of San Felipe, New Mexico (100000220), and Santo Domingo Pueblo (100000123) were removed from the dataset because they have the Census class code as “D0”, which is “Statistical or legal area administered and/or claimed by two or more American Indian tribes”. Since they are not clearly marked as “Legal federally recognized” entities, they have been removed. In addition to the updates listed above, all boundaries were replaced with 2025 census boundaries. This is performed by: Part A--sub-setting the layer by running this query: (CLASSFP IN ('D1','D2','D3') AND COMPTYP = 'R' AND FUNCSTAT = 'A'). Part B--create one to many join of old production features with new elements added from updated EPA Tribal Names Service dataset. Note that joins to Census data require GEOID and joins to EPA Tribal Names require EPA_ID.
