These standards are designed to ensure the air remains safe and healthy for both residents and visitors. In this context, areas are classified as either in &quot;attainment&quot; (meeting EPA air quality standards) or &quot;nonattainment&quot; (not meeting them). The summary below outlines the District&apos;s current status with respect to these classifications. </p><ul><li>\u00a0<strong>Ground-Level Ozone (O</strong><sub>3</sub><strong>)</strong>: The District and the metropolitan region are currently in <span><strong>moderate nonattainment</strong></span> status of the 2015 8-hour ground-level O<sub>3</sub> NAAQS, though have also been determined by EPA to have attained &quot;clean data&quot; and are in the process of submitting a redesignation request to EPA. </li><li><strong>Particulate Matter</strong>: The District is in <span><strong>attainment</strong></span> for the 2012 annual PM<sub>2.5</sub> NAAQS and the 24-hour NAAQS. EPA strengthened the primary annual PM2.5  standard in 2024 from 12.0 \u03bcg/m\u00b3 to 9.0 \u03bcg/m\u00b3; this revised standard should be considered separately from the District&apos;s prior attainment status. </li><li><strong>Carbon Monoxide (CO)</strong>: The District is in <span><strong>attainment</strong></span> for the current 8-hour and the 1-hour NAAQS.</li><li><strong>Sulfur Dioxide (SO</strong><sub>2</sub><strong>)</strong>: The District is in <span><strong>attainment</strong></span> for the 2010 1-hour primary SO<sub>2</sub> NAAQS and the 2024 annual secondary SO<sub>2</sub> NAAQS. </li><li><strong>Nitrogen Dioxide (NO</strong><sub>2</sub><strong>)</strong>: The District is in <span><strong>attainment</strong></span> for the 2010 1-hour and the 1971 annual NAAQS. </li><li>Lead (Pb): The District is in <span><strong>attainment</strong></span> for the 2008 NAAQS.</li></ul>", "distribution": [{"@type": "dcat:Distribution", "accessURL": "https://opendata.dc.gov/apps/DCGIS::report-on-air-quality-trends-in-the-district-of-columbia", "format": "Web Page", "mediaType": "text/html", "title": "ArcGIS Hub Dataset"}, {"@type": "dcat:Distribution", "accessURL": "https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/79a80bb4a7074b6989f94a4a5b154675", "format": "ArcGIS GeoServices REST API", "mediaType": "application/json", "title": "ArcGIS GeoService"}], "identifier": "https://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=79a80bb4a7074b6989f94a4a5b154675", "issued": "2022-01-20T14:21:05.000Z", "keyword": ["air quality", "carbon", "climate", "dc", "district of columbia", "doee", "environment", "naaqs", "nitrogen", "ozone", "particulate matter", "washington dc"], "landingPage": "https://opendata.dc.gov/apps/DCGIS::report-on-air-quality-trends-in-the-district-of-columbia", "license": "https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0", "modified": "2026-07-24T15:00:00.000Z", "publisher": {"name": "Department of Energy and Environment"}, "spatial": "-77.1759,38.7870,-76.8933,39.0010", "theme": ["geospatial"], "title": "Report on Air Quality Trends in the District of Columbia"}
