Agricultural irrigation water use, as defined in this case, meets a variety of needs before, during, and after growing seasons (e.g., dust suppression, field preparation, chemical application, weed control, salt removal from root zones, frost protection, crop cooling, and harvesting). Estimates include self-supplied surface and groundwater, as well as supplies from irrigation-specific organizations (e.g., companies, districts, cooperatives, government). This dataset was produced by the US EPA to support research and online mapping activities related to EnviroAtlas. EnviroAtlas (https://www.epa.gov/enviroatlas) allows the user to interact with a web-based, easy-to-use, mapping application to view and analyze multiple ecosystem services for the contiguous United States. Where estimates were available, golf course irrigation was excluded in the development of this map. Remotely-sensed irrigation and the re-aggregation of water use also have limitations. Vacillating weather patterns influence the irrigation demand and, therefore, satellite imagery over time. Irrigation water withdrawals, such as with the county-level estimates, are calculated in the county in which they occur. This water, however, may be delivered across county or watershed boundaries before it is applied, resulting in differences between the county-level data and the remotely-sensed data. Considerable efforts have been made to report the most accurate estimates across these data. true Entity and Attribute Information Entity and Attribute Overview: In general terms, agricultural irrigation per acre per day per county was estimated using 2010 USGS Water Use data. Then, to ensure the capture of remotely sensed or detected irrigation, counties with zero irrigation per acre per day were assigned generalized state level values. These county-level water use values were then converted and distributed according to remotely sensed irrigated locations and potentially irrigated crop types per 30 meter square or pixel on the ground. This water use was then summarized for each 12-digit HUC or watershed. Regarding the USGS Water Use data, the USGS estimates a variety of water use data at 5-year intervals through the National Water Use Information Program (NWUIP - https://water.usgs.gov/watuse/data). Data is collected at the state level by USGS water-use study chiefs and estimates are provided at the county level. Compilation methods vary slightly by state, depending on available data and relevance. Coefficients are derived and applied as needed. Overall guidelines used by the water-use study chiefs and the original data are available through the NWUIP website (https://pubs.usgs.gov/tm/2007/tm4e1). The USGS Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Irrigated Agriculture Dataset for the United States (MIrAD-US) was derived at 250m resolution using the National Land Cover Dataset (NLCD), USDA Census of Agriculture irrigated area statistics, and annual maximum vegetation index calculated from NASA MODIS imagery. The potentially irrigated crop locations were refined to 30m resolution through use of the combined 2011 USDA Cropland Data Layer and the 2011 MRLC National Land Cover Data layer derived by EnviroAtlas.
