The\nNational Center for Education Statistics\u2019 (NCES) Education Demographic and\nGeographic Estimate (EDGE) program develops annually updated school district\nboundary composite files that include public elementary, secondary, and unified\nschool district boundaries clipped to the U.S. shoreline. School districts are\nspecial-purpose governments and administrative units designed by state and\nlocal officials to provide public education for local residents. District\nboundaries are collected for NCES by the U.S. Census Bureau to develop\ndemographic estimates and to support educational research and program\nadministration. The NCES Common Core of Data (CCD) program is an annual\ncollection of basic administrative characteristics for all public schools,\nschool districts, and state education agencies in the United States. These\ncharacteristics are reported by state education officials and include directory\ninformation, number of students, number of teachers, grade span, and other\nconditions. The administrative attributes in this layer were developed from the\n2021-2022 CCD collection.
