The dataset includes X-ray fluorescence (XRF) elemental abundances, particle size distributions, visible and near-infrared spectrophotometry data, and magnetic susceptibility measurements, along with line-scan images of the cores.\nThese cores were collected to investigate modern floodplain dynamics, sedimentary processes, and irrigation-related depositional signatures in an arid to semi-arid environment that has been shaped by millennia of river management, agriculture, and land use. The data are structured to support geomorphological, paleoenvironmental, and geoarchaeological research on sediment sources, hydrologic regimes, and stratigraphic changes across southern Iraq.\nThe data presented here were collected in 2024-2025 at the USGS Florence Bascom Geoscience Center (FBGC) in Reston, VA.  Multi-sensor core logger data and line-scan images were collected using instrumentation housed in the Bascom Multi-Sensor Core Logger (BASCORE) Laboratory, and particle size distribution data were collected in the Bascom Laser Diffraction Sedimentology Laboratory.\nAny use of trade, firm, or product names is for descriptive purposes only and does not imply endorsement by the U.S. Government.", "distribution": [{"@type": "dcat:Distribution", "accessURL": "https://doi.org/10.5066/P13HGVV2", "description": "Landing page for access to the data", "format": "XML", "mediaType": "application/http", "title": "Digital Data"}, {"@type": "dcat:Distribution", "description": "The metadata original format", "downloadURL": "https://data.usgs.gov/datacatalog/metadata/USGS.68ae0ee9d4be02406c8cf1d6.xml", "format": "XML", "mediaType": "text/xml", "title": "Original Metadata"}], "identifier": "http://datainventory.doi.gov/id/dataset/USGS_68ae0ee9d4be02406c8cf1d6", "keyword": ["Euphrates", "FBGC", "Florence Bascom Geoscience Center", "Geochemistry", "Geography", "Geomorphology", "Holocene", "Iraq", "Mesopotamia", "Mesopotamian Plain", "Sedimentology", "Shatt al-Gharraf", "Soil Sciences", "Tigris", "U.S. Geological Survey", "USGS", "USGS:68ae0ee9d4be02406c8cf1d6", "X-ray fluorescence", "XRF", "alluvial sedimentation", "color reflectance", "core logging", "elemental", "floodplain", "geoarchaeology", "geochemistry", "geomorphology", "geoscientificInformation", "grain size", "irrigation", "magnetic susceptibility", "multi-proxy", "pXRF", "particle size analysis", "sediment core", "sedimentology"], "modified": "2025-09-22T00:00:00Z", "publisher": {"@type": "org:Organization", "name": "U.S. Geological Survey"}, "spatial": "44.3570, 31.3310, 46.1870, 32.9980", "theme": ["geospatial"], "title": "Multi-proxy geochemical and sedimentological data from 20 short sediment cores collected along the Euphrates, Tigris, and Shatt al-Gharraf rivers in the lower Mesopotamian Plain, Iraq"}
