Continuous veno-venous haemodiafiltration (CVVHD) is therefore\n\t\t\t\tused as an alternative to conventional haemodialysis. Haemodialysis is\n\t\t\t\tassociated with an activation of the immune system. The aim of the present\n\t\t\t\tstudy was to test the hypothesis that initiation of CVVHD influences the immune\n\t\t\t\tsystem with release of proinflammatory cytokines followed by a decrease in\n\t\t\t\tgranulocyte activation, as assessed by the expression of adhesion\n\t\t\t\tmolecules.\n        \n        \n          Results:\n          Fifteen patients were included. Mean Acute Physiology and Chronic\n\t\t\t\tHealth Evaluation-2 score before CVVHD was 19 (range 8\u231327). Mean duration of\n\t\t\t\tCVVHD treatment was 9 days (1\u231321 days). Tumour necrosis factor-\u03b1 and\n\t\t\t\tinterleukin-8 were detectable in plasma in all patients, whereas interleukin-10\n\t\t\t\twas detectable only in a few patients. Proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory\n\t\t\t\tcytokines were detected in the ultrafiltrate. Large intraindividual and\n\t\t\t\tinterindividual variations were demonstrated for all of the immunological\n\t\t\t\tparameters studied.\n        \n        \n          Conclusion:\n          The hypothesis that CVVHD induces the release of proinflammatory\n\t\t\t\tcytokines followed by a decrease in granulocyte activation was not confirmed in\n\t\t\t\tthe present study.
