Approximately 16 km of backbarrier shoreline on the Outer Banks were surveyed within the towns of Frisco and Hatteras Village on the southern end of Hatteras Island, NC and on Bogue Banks, NC. The dataset includes the type of shoreline, the length of shoreline, and the damage category (see Gittman et al. 2014 and Smith et al. 2017). These data were collected to assess the amount of damage caused by Hurricane Dorian to different shoreline types in coastal North Carolina. Navigating the vessel parallel to the shoreline, a Trimble R10 was used to record GPS points for which concomitant data on shoreline type, the presence or absence of damage, and the category of damage for each shoreline stretch was coded into each GPS recording. Shoreline types included bulkhead, riprap revetment, sill, bulkhead with riprap revetment, bulkhead with sill, living shoreline, marsh, and beach (for detailed descriptions of shoreline types see the column description for ‘Shoreline_Type’). Damage classifications were modified from Thieler and Young (1991) and were as follows: landward erosion (for engineered structures), erosion (for natural shorelines), structural damage, breach, and collapse (for detailed descriptions of damage category see the column description for ‘Damage_Category”). GPS recordings taken at 10m intervals were initiated at the beginning of continuous stretches of a given shoreline type and ended upon reaching the end of that shoreline type. Where damage was observed, the previous recording was terminated and a new series of GPS point recordings was initiated for the length of the damaged segment of shoreline. The sampling interval of GPS point collection was reduced where necessary to capture small sections of damage. A photograph was taken of each instance of damage to shoreline structures or natural shoreline. GSP data were imported into ESRI ArcMap 10.4.1 as shapefiles. Shapefiles were overlaid on 2019 aerial imagery (Maxar Technologies) and digitized shorelines of Bogue Banks and the Outer Banks (NC DCM, 2012). The digitized shorelines produced by NC DCM classified Dare County, NC (the county in which Frisco and Hatteras are located) and Carteret County, NC (the county in which Bogue Banks is located) using 2012 and 2010 aerial orthoimagery, respectively. These ArcGIS continuous polyline shapefiles included the shoreline type (marsh, beach, modified with structure [hardened]) and shoreline structure type (boat ramp, bulkhead, bulkhead and riprap combined, breakwater, groin/jetty, sill, riprap revetment). The NC DCM digitized shorelines layer was clipped to include only the shorelines we surveyed in Frisco, Hatteras, and Bogue Banks. Our GPS data was compared against the NC DCM classifications for the three surveyed regions. Where NC DCM shoreline classification for a given stretch of shoreline differed from that observed in our field survey (e.g. shoreline was classified as a marsh or beach in 2010 or 2012 in Carteret County or Dare County, respectively, and was recorded as a riprap revetment in our survey), the recently verified shoreline classification from our survey was selected and the NC DCM shoreline classification was corrected.
