It also includes the absolute abundance and temporal variation of dinoflagellates and diatoms from 1992-2000. The objective of this project was to build an 8-year time series (1992-2000) to study variability in the biodiversity and abundance of diatoms and thecate dinoflagellates in La Jolla Bight, California. This project will help to fill the gap of a long-term phytoplankton time series in Southern California. Dinoflagellates and diatoms were selected for the following reasons: (1) they are important members of the unicellular plankton in this area, forming the largest component of seasonal variability of local phytoplankton; (2) they are the most well characterized components of the phytoplankton in this area; (3) a historical database of the species abundance of diatoms and dinoflagellates from Scripps Pier collections exists from the extensive work of W. E. Allen during (1917-1939), so the present time series data can be directly compared to those of Allen; (4) both groups include bloom-forming and toxin-producing species that are commonly observed along the California coast; and (5) both groups are well preserved in the archive collection. The data from this project can be compared to the historical dataset from Allen (1917-1939), and we will be able to define long-term changes in the diatom/dinoflagellates community structure.
