These data were collected to map benthic habitats around Madeline Island and Gull Island Shoal, Lake Superior. This collection provides geospatial information to identify and characterize benthic habitats around Madeline Island and Gull Island Shoal, Lake Superior. This collection was developed by the Collaborative Benthic Habitat Mapping in the Nearshore Waters of the Great Lakes Basin project, and was funded by the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. The project is a collaboration between the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the National Park Service, the U.S. Geological Survey, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and partners such as Michigan Technological University and CVision AI, Inc. The project provides geospatial information that supports management decisions intended to address multiple littoral issues including increases in coastal erosion and sedimentation, degradation of native fish habitat, coastal development, water quality changes, harmful algal blooms, and species invasions. This collection was developed by the Collaborative Benthic Habitat Mapping in the Nearshore Waters of the Great Lakes Basin project, and was funded by the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. The project is a collaboration between the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the National Park Service, the U.S. Geological Survey, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and partners such as Michigan Technological University and CVision AI, Inc. The project provides geospatial information that supports management decisions intended to address multiple littoral issues including increases in coastal erosion and sedimentation, degradation of native fish habitat, coastal development, water quality changes, harmful algal blooms, and species invasions. GL-23-01 was a 24-day benthic mapping cruise led by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS) and Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL), and Michigan Technological University (MTU) between June 20 and August 4, 2023. The cruise mission was to characterize lakebed habitats in southeastern Lake Superior offshore the Bayfield Peninsula and provide ground-truthing observation data for predictive substrate and biological community models. The cruise study area comprised 292 sq. km of lakebed between 3- and 80-m water depth. The study area extended south of Madeline Island and Michigan Island, across Gull Island Shoal, and included part of the Apostle Island National Lakeshore. A Seaviewer drop camera and Outland 1000 remotely operated vehicle (ROV) were used to collect underwater imagery at 176 and 52 sites, respectively. A Ponar dredge was also used to characterize fine, unconsolidated sediments at 23 sites. All operations were conducted off the NOAA Vessel R2601 Cyclops, temporarily stationed at the Bayfield Marina, Bayfield, Wisconsin. Sampling sites were chosen to ground-truth lakebed features and habitats identifiable from various nearshore multibeam echosounder and lidar surveys completed between 2007 and 2023. A stratified random sampling design was employed to select sampling sites covering the full range of depths and habitats in the study area. A separate cruise, led by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) May 6–June 5, 2024, focused in deeper water and provided complementary ground-truthing data using an IVER3 autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). Similar to the ROV and drop camera, the AUV collected high-resolution, downward-pointing imagery of the lakebed. Data from GL-23-01 and the USGS cruise are intended to be complementary and will be annotated with similar workflows to provide seamless ground-truthing coverage.
