The method of evaluating and enhancing the BTS TOFC/COFC Rail Intermodal Facilities dataset involved the validation of 07/22/2025 BTS TOFC/COFC facilities dataset, removing facilities that no longer exist, and adding new facilities. Primary sources of validation included websites of railroads of Class I and Class II, websites of ports (when ports are identified), and the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA) Intermodal Data. In addition, secondary sources were used for validation purposes that include Centralized Station Master (CSM), Waybill intermodal freight movement dataset from the Surface Transportation Board (STB), and Rail yard data derived from Freight Railroad Administration (FRA) North American Rail Network, FRA’s North American Rail Network (NARN) Rail Line dataset from BTS NTAD dataset, satellite imagery, and internet searches with relevant articles. The first step was validating the existing BTS TOFC COFC layer facility and attributes against the sources to check and update the locations, and attributes as well as flag facilities that need to be removed. The next step was the addition of new facilities and new attributes. New facilities were identified and added after thorough checks from various sources, and confirming their closeness to rail lines, intermodal connectivity to either truck or marine or both, and facility related attributes. New attributes were added for providing details about the facility that is being served by Rail, Truck, and /or Marine, and for providing authoritative and standardized port names by using USACE’s port unique identifier codes. These were then sent to the BTS team for review and feedback.
