It includes raster datasets at 360 x 360 m spatial resolution depicting the predicted probability of occurrence for each of these taxa and a raster dataset at 360 x 360 m spatial resolution depicting the predicted taxonomic richness. These predictions provide a baseline for the potential distribution of these vulnerable and ecologically significant communities in the northwestern Hawaiian Islands (NWHI), and will support management planning, permitting, exploration and sanctuary designation efforts by the Monument. The data collection also includes raster datasets at 360 x 360 m spatial resolution depicting each of the 44 spatial environmental predictor variables considered for fitting the models. Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument (PMNM) was established in 2006 to protect a range of unique resources in the NWHI, including DSCS communities. In 2016, its boundaries were expanded, making it the largest marine protected area in the world. DSCS communities are vulnerable to anthropogenic impacts such as fishing and ocean acidification, and have recently been the focus of conservation and management efforts across the U.S. However, data describing their locations are often limited by the considerable costs and difficulties of surveying the deep ocean. Prior to 2015, few surveys had documented DSCSs in the deeper waters below 1,000 m within PMNM. In 2015 and 2016, expeditions by NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer (operated by NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research, OER) surveyed previously unexplored seafloor features within PMNM to document deep-sea coral, sponge, and fish communities as part of a broader campaign focused on the deep-sea areas within Pacific monuments and sanctuaries (Kelley et al. 2016, Kennedy et al. 2019). In 2018, the E/V Nautilus (operated by the Ocean Exploration Trust, OET) surveyed several seamounts in a poorly known area of PMNM. The University of Hawaiʻi’s Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory (HURL) annotated DSCS observations from surveys conducted on these expeditions. While these recent data collections provided extremely valuable information about the deep-sea benthic communities within PMNM, much of the deep-sea area within the Monument is still unexplored. To address this need, NOAA National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS), developed models predicting the spatial distributions of 22 DSCS taxa within the PMNM. Spatial predictive modeling is a cost-effective tool for identifying potential distributions of DSCSs in areas where data are sparse, yet information is needed to support a range of conservation and management decisions. Maps of the predicted DSCS distributions were reviewed by local experts and used to identify and prioritize sites for future exploration and research as well as for evaluation of enhanced resource protection in PMNM. Relevant DSCS taxa were selected to meet the needs of the PMNM and spanned a range of depths, habitat types, ecological significance, as well as economic and cultural importance. Presence-absence of each taxon was assigned at the level of the model grid cell using the records of DSCS occurrence. A measure of survey effort was also assigned to each grid cell using the navigation data or video log from each survey represented in the records. Three statistical modeling approaches were used: Boosted Regression Trees (BRTs), Generalized Additive Models (GAMs), and maximum entropy (Maxent). Predictions from these different models were combined to create one ensemble prediction for each DSCS taxon. The ensemble predictions for the 22 DSCS taxa were summed to estimate DSCS richness across the study area. Variability in model predictions was also mapped for each taxon to provide a measure of the confidence in model predictions.
