These data are part of a large passive acoustic survey across the eastern Gulf continental shelf edge to assess impacts to the marine mammals as part of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Natural Resource Damage Assessment in the Gulf of Mexico. MARUs (Marine Autonomous Recording Units from Cornell University) were deployed at 16 sites, 39-241 km apart and at depths of 231-1370 m, along the continental shelf from June 2010 through February 2012. Sperm whale click trains, a sequence of 5 or more usual clicks in a sequence with 0.3-1.7 s between clicks were detected with a validated automated detector applied to 1-4 kHz of the acoustic recordings to determine hourly sperm whale presence at each site. Sperm whale presence over time across the sites were statistically modeled to identify seasonal patterns of occurrence and compare the time periods immediately following the oil spill to a year later. The detector was developed using a set of confirmed sperm whale click trains recorded under a variety of environmental and acoustic sensor noise conditions. Usual clicks for this detector training set were recorded in 2008 at the U.S. Navy’s Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center (AUTEC) on Andros Island, Bahamas and on the MARUs in this study. To evaluate the performance of the automated detection algorithm, the detector output was compared to a verified sub-sample of sperm whale click trains in 3,050 h of recordings randomly selected from the entire collection of acoustic data. Any recorded sperm whale click trains in this sub-sample were visually identified in spectrograms and confirmed by analysts experienced in the identification of sperm whale clicks. Performance of the detection algorithm was also compared with ambient noise conditions. The continuous spectrogram was computed using a Hann window, a fast Fourier transform (FFT) size of delta t = 0.0127 s, delta f = 7.81 Hz, and a calibration reference level of 85.5 re: 1 µPa, and was limited to the 1000-4000 Hz band to remove low-frequency noise and account for the different sample rates of the acoustic recordings and anti-aliasing, low-pass filtering applied to the recorded sound >3.2 kHz in first and second deployments.
