All data were collected by the same observer, however, the sampling period spanned seven months and there were some strong storms during that time that may have affected benthic communities. Benthic communities were assessed along transects extending from near the river mouth to the seaward end of the bay. Transects were surveyed along both the north and south sides of the bay at 1 m and 6 m. The length of each transect was determined by the size of the bay. The shallow reef crest transects were 450m, the deep transect on the south side of the bay was 400m long, and only the outer 150m were sampled on the North Deep due to time constraints. Every five meters along the transect, the biologist assessed the benthic community in a 1-m2 quadrat strung in a grid with 25 intersections for benthic cover. The benthic organism beneath each intersecting point of the grid was identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level.
