This inlet was closed by mechanical action in 1983 and reopened by the passage of hurricanes Helene and Milton in 2024, reconnecting Little Sarasota Bay to the Gulf of America (Gulf of Mexico). A total of seven cores were collected, with approximate recovery lengths between 0.54 meters (m) and 1.05 m. The cores were collected using a mechanical post driver and 3-inch (7.62 centimeters [cm]) diameter aluminum barrels.", "distribution": [{"@type": "dcat:Distribution", "accessURL": "https://doi.org/10.5066/P1CQ6QRR", "description": "Landing page for access to the data", "format": "XML", "mediaType": "application/http", "title": "Digital Data"}, {"@type": "dcat:Distribution", "description": "The metadata original format", "downloadURL": "https://data.usgs.gov/datacatalog/metadata/USGS.cd72480c-1dc9-48b6-a150-955ed04d59ee.xml", "format": "XML", "mediaType": "text/xml", "title": "Original Metadata"}], "identifier": "http://datainventory.doi.gov/id/dataset/USGS_cd72480c-1dc9-48b6-a150-955ed04d59ee", "keyword": ["2024-330-FA", "CMHRP", "Casey Key", "Coastal and Marine Hazards and Resources Program", "Gulf of America", "Gulf of Mexico", "Little Sarasota Bay", "Midnight Pass", "Midnight Pass (historical)", "Palmer Point Park", "SPCMSC", "Sarasota County", "Siesta Key", "St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center", "State of Florida", "U.S. Geological Survey", "USGS", "USGS:cd72480c-1dc9-48b6-a150-955ed04d59ee", "core analysis", "drilling and coring", "field sampling", "geology", "geoscientificInformation", "grain-size analysis", "location", "mechanical post driver coring", "photography", "sedimentology", "unconsolidated deposits"], "modified": "2026-04-22T00:00:00Z", "publisher": {"@type": "org:Organization", "name": "U.S. Geological Survey"}, "spatial": "-82.51233233, 27.20742305, -82.5111425, 27.20944337", "theme": ["geospatial"], "title": "Sediment Data From Cores Collected in 2025 at Midnight Pass, Florida"}
