Leg II focused on archaeological targets in and around the Norfolk Canyon area, with some emphasis on biological objectives to expand upon data collected during last years cruise. 24-hour operations included 12-16 hour remotely operated vehicle (ROV) dives which took digital images and high definition video of the seafloor and collect water, sediment, and different types of fauna for research objectives during the day. Night operations included non-ROV sampling, including box coring, bottom trawling, recovery of benthic landers, multibeam mapping, collection of water column environmental data, and water sampling (using a CTD instrument with niskin bottle rosette). Data expected: Scientific Computing System (SCS) data, ROV sensor data, Underwater video/framegrab images, sampling logs/analyses, CTD data, summary reports During our 2013 cruise, we will use the Jason II ROV (owned by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution), which can reach 6,500 meters and will make longer dives (16 hours per day) than last year. We will be investigating a potential new cold seep in deep water, in addition to re-visiting the ‘Hecker’ seep site we found last year. And we will, of course, continue to explore, document, and try to understand the different types of vulnerable marine communities in the deep canyons of the region. The system, originally used for high accuracy (Seabeam Classic) charting of the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), is capable of hydrographic charting and seafloor acoustic backscatter imaging in water depths of 50 to 11,000 meters with up to 151 beams. Swath coverage (75 percent of water depth) varies as a function of depth, from 150 degrees at 1,000 meters, to 120 degrees at 5,000 meters, and 90 degrees at 11,000 meters, with a resolution of two degrees. The system regularly operates in 4000+ meters of water but is effective in shallower applications (less than 500m).
