Description:
- Abstract: This tile of the National Elevation Dataset (NED) is 1/9 arc-second resolution. The National Elevation Dataset (NED) serves the elevation layer of The National Map, and provides basic elevation information for earth science studies and mapping applications in the United States. Scientists and resource managers use NED data for global change research, hydrologic modeling, resource monitoring, mapping and visualization, and many other applications. The NED is an elevation dataset that consists of seamless layers and a high resolution layer. Each of these layers are composed of the best available raster elevation data of the conterminous United States, Alaska, Hawaii, territorial islands, Mexico and Canada. The NED is updated continually as new data become available. All NED data are in the public domain. The NED are derived from diverse source data that are processed to a common coordinate system and unit of vertical measure. These data are distributed in geographic coordinates in units of decimal degrees, and in conformance with the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD 83). All elevation values are in meters and, over the continental United States, are referenced to the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD 88). The vertical reference will vary in other areas. NED data are available nationally (except for Alaska) at resolutions of 1 arc-second (approx. 30 meters) and 1/3 arc-second (approx. 10 meters), and in limited areas at 1/9 arc-second (approx. 3 meters). In most of Alaska, only lower resolution source data are available. As a result, most NED data for Alaska are at 2-arc-second (approx. 60 meters) grid spacing. Part of Alaska is available at the 1- and 1/3-arc-second resolution from IFSAR collections starting in 2010. Plans are in place for collection of statewide IFSAR in Alaska through 2016.
- Purpose: The NED serves as the elevation layer of The National Map, and provides basic elevation information for earth science studies and mapping applications in the United States. The data are utilized by the scientific and resource management communities for global change research, hydrologic modeling, resource monitoring, mapping and visualization applications.
- Supplemental Information: This tile of the National Elevation Dataset (NED) is 1/9 arc-second resolution, Image file format, and covers a one degree block. The geographic area of coverage is described below in the Bounding Coordinates. Additional information for the NED may be found on http://ned.usgs.gov/. Data may be downloaded through The National Map Viewer: http://nationalmap.gov/viewer.html. Direct links for direct access by automated services are provided in the Distribution section of this metadata.; {"gdaId" : 6031221}

- Process Description: USGS NED ned19_n40x00_w104x50_co_denvercity_2008 1/9 arc-second 2009 15 x 15 minute IMG. "Data Collection:
Using a Leica ALS50 Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) system, 145 flight lines of high density (0.7 meter ground sample distance) data were collected over areas in the Denver Metropolitan Region (approximately 947 square miles). Multiple returns were recorded for each laser pulse along with an intensity value for each return. The data acquisition occurred between March 15, 2008 and April 19, 2008. During the LIDAR campaign, the Sanborn field crew conducted a GPS field survey to establish final coordinates of the ground base stations for final processing of the base-remote GPS solutions."

Process Step:
- Process Description: "Airborne GPS Processing:
Airborne GPS data was differentially processed and integrated with the post processed IMU data to derive a smoothed best estimate of trajectory (SBET). The SBET was used to reduce the LiDAR slant range measurements to a raw reflective surface for each flight line. The overlap between flight lines was removed to provide a homogeneous coverage, and the coverage was classified to extract a bare earth digital elevation model (DEM).
Airborne GPS is differentially processed using the GrafNAV V7.50 software by Waypoint Consulting of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The PDOP and distance separation is as follows:
IMU data is processed using the PosProc V4.3 software by Applanix Corporation of Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada.
The reflective surface is derived using the ALS Post Processor software by Leica Geosystems GIS & Mapping Division of Atlanta, Georgia.
The classification and quality control (QC) of LiDAR data is carried out using TerraScan software by Terrasolid Limited of Helinski, Finland."
-
Process Step:
- Process Description: "IMU data Processing:
IMU data provides information concerning roll, pitch and yaw of collection platform during collection event. IMU information allows the pulse vector to be properly placed in 3D space allowing the distance from the aircraft reference point to be properly positioned on the elevation model surface. IMU data is processed using the PosProc V4.3 software by Applanix Corporation of Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada."
-
Process Step:
- Process Description: "LiDAR Calibration:
Sanborn performs two types of calibrations on its LiDAR system. The first is a building calibration, and it is done any time the LiDAR system has been moved from one plane to another. New calibration parameters are computed and compared with previous calibration runs. If there is any change, the new values are updated internally or during the LiDAR post-processing. These values are applied to all data collected with this plane/ALS-50 system configuration.
Once final processing calibration parameters are established from the building data, a precisely-surveyed surface is observed with the LiDAR system to check for stability in the system. This is done several times during each mission. An average of the systematic biases are applied on a per mission basis."
-
Process Step:
- Process Description: "LIDAR Point Classification:
The classification and quality control (QC) of LiDAR data is carried out using TerraScan software by Terrasolid Limited of Helinski, Finland."
-
Process Step:
- Process Description: "Output Files For Product Generation:
The product output of LiDAR data is carried out using GeoCue software of Madison, Alabama (LAS Binary and LAS Binary Bare Earth). Intensity images were created using TerraScan software by Terrasolid Limited of Helinski, Finland."

Process Step:
- Process Description: The Lidar data for Denver, Colorado, and surround areas were processed into a NED 1/9th dataset using the ESRI software. The float data (32 tiles) were converted to Arc grids. It was necessary to use Define Projection and Project functions on the original data. The data were then reprojected from Geographic Decimal Seconds NAD83 to Geographic Decimal Degrees NAD83 using ArcTools. The Z unit of data was changed from centimeters to meters (divided by 100) using raster calculator. The shape file generated from the original data extent was edited to eliminate the edge TINing effects. As the final step, DEM and shaded-relief products were generated. Data QC was performed by reviewing the hill shades to detect irregularities in the data. The data were then loaded into ArcSDE to be made available for public access download.
Note: There is one NoData stripe around location of -105.186564, and 39.754694 Decimal Degrees.
