Description:
Abstract: Forests provide economic and ecological value. High amounts of forest edge indicates a highly fragmented forest, which generally diminishes those economic and ecological values. EDGE65 is the percent of forest that is classified as edge using a 65 ha scale. Purpose: The data can be used for analysis and general mapping. Information provided in these data tables is indexed to HUC Code, and can be joined to the HUC_CODE field of the HUC250K layer. It was developed for use in EPA's Regional Vulnerability Assessment (ReVA) program. The ReVA program is designed to produce the methods needed to understand a region's environmental quality and its spatial pattern. The objective is to assist decision makers in making more informed decisions and in estimating the large-scale changes that might result from their actions.
Supplemental Information: This is an EPA-Produced Data Set that is part of EPA's ReVA program. The ReVA program is an approach to regional scale, priority-setting assessment being developed by EPA's Office of Research and Development (ORD). ReVA will expand cooperation among the laboratories and centers of ORD, by integrating research on human and environmental health, ecorestoration, landscape analysis, regional exposure and process modeling, problem formulation, and ecological risk guidelines. Process Description: EDGE65 was calculated by moving a 27 pixel by 27 pixel window across the NLCD land cover. When the center pixel was forest, the number of forest pixels in the window was summed. If the amount of forest in the window was greater than 60%, but less than 100%, the center cell was labeled edge. EDGE65 included NLCD codes 41, 42 and 43 as forest.
