Data Identification
Abstract: METAR is a routine scheduled observation and is the primary observation code used in the United States to satisfy requirements for reporting surface meteorological data. METAR contains a report of wind, visibility, present weather, sky condition, temperature, dew point, and altimeter setting collectively referred to as the body of the report. In addition, information that elaborates on data in the body of the report may be appended to the METAR. This significant information can be found in the section referred to as Remarks.
Purpose: METARs are an observation report which may be used by aviation interests, forecasters, and numerical weather prediction data assimilation.

Lineage: METAR observation reports are generated once an hour or half-hour, but if conditions change significantly, a report known as a special (SPECI) may be issued. Some METARs are encoded by automated airport weather stations located at airports, military bases, and other sites. Some locations use augmented observations, which are recorded by digital sensors, encoded via software, and then reviewed by certified weather observers or forecasters prior to being transmitted. Observations may also be taken by trained observers or forecasters who manually observe and encode their observations prior to transmission.
